Tyra and Thomas’s destination wedding in Mexico at the Barcelo was an absolute blast full of sand, water, blue skies and fun.
I was absolutely honoured when Tyra asked if I would go down to Hautulco, Mexico and photograph their wedding in January. I have done quite a few destination weddings and I always bring another photographer with me. This is for a few important reasons. Number one, it isn’t safe for me to travel with 20k of equipment by myself. I like to have someone there just in case. Number two, if, for any reason, I land in the hospital, the second photographer can take over.
I was fairly confident I could photograph the wedding by myself so I suggested another option and I am so glad I did! Every single destination wedding I have done ends up in disappointment with hair and makeup. Every. One. I suggested to Tyra to bring Dallen Nicole, hair and makeup artist, as my assistant and to do hair and makeup in order to make sure the results were amazing.
Dallen has worked as my hair and makeup artist for over 6 years and is well used to assisting me. This worked out perfectly as she was able to do hair and makeup on the day of the wedding and our day after session!
Tyra and Thomas travelled down to Hautulco with their son, family and friends for a week of fun and to tie the knot. Hautulco is very close to the equator so it is HOT, but beyond beautiful! It has a quaint feel that you don’t find in busier spots like Cancun.
I was VERY impressed with how amazing the wedding was at the Barcelo. The day started off in the girls room with hair and makeup. The bridal suite was brought champagne and room service allowing them all to stay in the room.
Their gorgeous ceremony was done on the front lawn in the gazebo overlooking the water. Thankfully, the staff were waiting by with water and drinks for the guests to cool down and we were able to find some shade for family photos.
It is SOOO hot down there that the sand hurts your feet until is starts going down. We did a few photos on the beach and then I recommended having a few drinks and letting the sun go down a bit (photog note: the light is also prettier as it goes down a bit).
Their reception followed with one of the most awesome DJ’s I have ever heard. He was super talented and kept the party going. See the super fun party pics below. Fun fact: I LOVE when the party gets going and I am able to get into the action and take photos.
